If you don't want to read a rant move along. Last week, something happened on Facebook that actually somewhat restored some of my faith in humanity. A pickle got more fans than Nickelback, what makes it such a feat is the fact that it gained 1.4 million fans. That is, however, when shit hit the fan. The childish little girl who made the page decided to take advantage of the 1.4 million fans, (many of whom I can only hope dislike Nickelback as much as I do) to get on her proverbial soapbox and basically advertise her blog. She figured she was so creative that she would gain followers or people to read her blog. She said she was answering some frequently asked questions some people in the group had. I, for one, didn't have any questions. The pickle won, it was funny. And maybe, just maybe some people not just me and my friends know/realized that Nickelback is fake bullshit and simply elicit an emotional reaction from unsuspecting and uneducated radio listeners purely for the financial gain of the music corporations. The little girl who made it painfully clear her name is Coral, (either she changed it wanting to be artsy or her parrents were on drugs) and that she did not hate Nickelback. Well I DO hate Nickelback, they shouldn't have got so famous, they assault my eardrums and yes, they do make me sick. Pickles make some people sick too, personally, I think they are delicious, but it is still the perfect symbol to represent how fucking stupid Nickelback is. The crafty little girl prefaced her note to the 1.4 million followers with a list of charities she thought were worthy causes complete with links. Bold move already, who doesn't like to support worthy causes when they can? But what did that have to do with any of this? She then went on to state how she doesn't hate Nickelback, as well as explain how she completely ripped the concept of the page off from someone else. From there it turns into a rant about how shallow the music business is today, how the Canadian music scene shouldn't be judged on Nickelback and how frugal and arty she is and how much she loves bands like The Used and "artists" like Lady Gaga. Then she promoted her blog. This was not the Coral fan page. She totally ruined the joke, and offended people like me who actually supported the page, sent the link to friends for them to join and actually made an effort to beat Nickelback. I'm sorry they had to read it. I'm even sorry you had to read this but I needed to rant. A post script: of course her note got like 400 comments, a few people like me agreed that she shouldn't have made the fucking thing. Then I saw something that baffled my mind. Several people chimed in that they actually "really like" Nickelbacks music. I personally, really like Black Sabbath's music and I would NEVER become a fan of a page that was pitting a pickle or something similar against them, it's just disrespectful. If you really are such a fan of Nickelback, why did you join a group making fun if it? I really don't understand, please enligten me. Do you know there is other music out there? Why do you like Chad Kroeger and company in the first place anyway? Do you love the way his voice sounds like hes defecating while singing, or is it mysoginistic lyrics like "you would look better with something in your mouth"? Fucking people these days. The joke all along has been Nickelback. If the page was can this peice of dog shit get more fans than Nickelback I would have voted for the peice of dog shit. Use the internet, think for yourself, find new bands, fuck the top 40, and if you do you are alright in my book. If you do all that and still think Nickelback is the bees knees well then I am genuinely sorry.

I miss this band. And yeah, thier last cd SUCKED. But this one was arguably thier best. It's a fucking perfect combination of sludge and old school hardcore, that is heavy and doesnt skimp out in the riff department, theres two vocalists, one has a little bit deeper voice and the other slightly higher. They lay the riffs and sludge on thick but without ever sounding muddy or fuzzy, and even throw in a little black metal influence, not to disuade you from wanting to hear this, I'm talking about more of the Bathory variety anyway. Check this out if you like it heavy and unrelenting.

Yeah, this has been posted at Sludge Swamp and a bunch of blogs. But get this, the band WANTS you to download it. It's thier link, free download sponsored by the band. It's cool as hell when bands do that. It's so good though that id fuckin' buy it. Band is from Russia, and play a cool mix of desert-ish stoner rock and other various stylings. Throw Kyuss, Mastodon, The Drive By Truckers, and maybe "This Aint Country" era Hank III in a blender and it might just sound kinda like this. There are some tripped out parts, some serious guitar playing and lots of textures here. The vocals arent the greatest but it still rocks in all the right places.

Yes, he has gone from White Zombie to white Christmas. I drive by his house on the way to my grandmothers all the time. I'm not asking much, so you may never reform your much better former band but for the love of Micheal Myers (whos franchise you have ruined forever) take the fucking Christmas lights down. I can't find much on this band. They came out durring the hight of grunge and sound like about how you would expect. Hands down, the best song on here is Fuel which I remember from the Airheads soundtrack. Some of this is mediocre even though the band was signed to Arista records, anyway something happened and they didn't promote it right or something and the band kinda just faded away. Man, does the song Fuel ever rock though. I uploaded this so Cheeto over at the sludge swamp could hear it because it might be the one grunge band he never heard of.

I am a diehard Pantera fan and this is a peice of metal history, the first album with the linup that the world would come to know and love. It still had some 80s trappings but thier direction shifted immediatley with the introduction of Philip H. Anselmo. There are some serious metal jams here. P.S.T. '88 is a personal favorite of mine because Dimebag Darrell sings that one. Other notable tracks are, although cheesey, Proud To Be Loud and Death Trap.

Haha. I don't even know where to start with this one. Yeah, that's Corey Taylor singing. Some of the songs here not only legitimately rock but rock harder than some of the pathetic pop rock shit Mr. Taylor is doing nowadays. I actually like a couple of songs, they had an awesome pop sensibility as well as that early 90's driving hard rock sound. Also Corey Taylor was like 19 and not completely full of himself yet. It says 1994 but it sounds more like 1990, there's tons of cheese, and yes that's right hair metal influence. Just listen to Bertha which sounds like the ugly warts n' all love child of Motley Crue and Joe Lynn Turner era Rainbow.

They called Black Flag hardcore or punk but they were so much more. By the time My War came out the songs had become longer, sludgier, and more introspective, with tons of metallic guitars and Black Sabbath influence. Shit was furious sounding. There are countless sludge bands this has had a direct influence on as well as more than a few extreme metal bands.

Man, I listened to this constantly in my teenage years. I missed the train on any sort of real hardcore scene but I remember seeing Hatebreed go from playing hole in the wall teen centers to Ozzfest a year later and it was a pretty big deal. They are from my state and I've met Jamey Jasta a couple times and he always seemed like a real down to earth guy. All that aside, even though they stole all the riffs from Entombed and Carcass, the songs here are short, heavy bursts of energy and it's rediculously fun to listen to.

All I could dig up on this band is Glenn Danzig produced the record and brought them on tour in the early 90s. The cd came out in 1990 and has some blatant Danzig influences although it comes off as a little rough around the edges. Could Danzig have done that on purpose in the studio? He should have given them over to Rick Rubin if you ask me. I think it's a cool listen though anyway though.

Iron Age - The Sleeping Eye (2009)

This is kinda tough to describe even though it's pretty straight foward. The guitar tone is perfect, and devistating, the vocals are screamed and the band draws from the best parts of hardcore and groove metal but theres something extra that sets it apart. It's not your run of the mill metalcore bullshit, in fact it's not metalcore at all. Something about it hits like a less doomy High On Fire, maybe throw in a dash of Entombed and the end result would probably come out like this. It's blaring out of my speakers while I write this and I would just like to say once more the guitars make it all worth while. Pure heavy god damn metal.

Kinda sort of side project of COC's Mike Dean and Woody Weatherman sometime in the 80's. Ironically Mike Dean had already left Corrosion Of Conformity by this time but jumped at a chance to write and record this monster with Woodroe. They got some other guy to play drums other than Reed Mullin but they took some song ideas Mike Dean had as well as some new songs and made what would become the Snake Nation record. It would turn out to be heavy, yet strangely sludgier than anything they had done in COC up until that point. Soon after Woody revealed his new Blind era COC lineup and this record kind of fell under the radar, it's too bad, I always thought it was pretty badass.

So the story goes a reviewer named Mike Saunders once described this album as "heavy metal laden shit rock", supposedly the first time the term heavy metal was ever used in print. That's pretty heavy. This is your averege run of the mill, old school boogie rock. While not nececarily really heavy, it's pretty rockin' and definately worth a listen.

Man, I feel like I ought to take a shower after listening to this one, to this day. Heavy, menacing, and with strangely bluesy riffs in parts, this shit sounds so evil and so malevolent it blows my mind. If someone was just getting interested in sludge I would promptly direct them to this. Shit is scary I tell you, not a happy listen at all.
